Yahoo spam complaints and the 0.3% threshold
Understand Yahoo’s complaint-rate denominator, the 0.3% requirement and what to investigate when the rate rises.
Know what Yahoo is measuring
Yahoo requires senders to keep the spam complaint rate below 0.3%. Yahoo’s FAQ says the rate shown in Sender Hub is calculated from complaints against messages delivered to the inbox.
That denominator matters. A sender-side calculation that includes messages delivered to spam can produce a lower-looking number. Compare definitions before comparing values.
Treat the threshold as an enforcement boundary
Yahoo says mail from a domain may be affected when the complaint rate is above the enforcement threshold. Its systems evaluate mail continuously and may defer mail from domains with high complaint rates.
A single daily number does not identify the campaign that caused the issue. Split your investigation by message stream, signup source, audience age, sending frequency and recent changes.
Use CFL reports to make the signal actionable
The Complaint Feedback Loop provides ARF reports when recipients mark enrolled DKIM-signed mail as spam. Suppress those recipients from further campaigns and use the message headers to identify the responsible stream.
If your ESP handles Yahoo CFL enrollment for you, verify how those reports are mapped into suppression and complaint reporting before creating a duplicate process.
Investigate the recipient expectation
Check whether the person asked for the specific subscription, whether the sending frequency matches that promise, and whether inactive or imported audiences were added recently. Yahoo recommends sending only to users who specifically requested the mail and avoiding purchased lists or preselected opt-ins.
After a correction, review fresh traffic. Do not treat a quiet complaint chart alone as proof that every placement or reputation problem is resolved.
