How to implement Yahoo unsubscribe requirements
Check List-Unsubscribe headers, the visible body link and the suppression workflow Yahoo expects for marketing and subscribed mail.
Apply the requirement to the right mail
Yahoo’s FAQ says the one-click unsubscribe requirement applies to promotional and marketing messages, not transactional messages such as order confirmations or password resets.
Keep those message types identifiable in your sending architecture. Mixing promotions into essential account mail can make the subscription expectation and suppression behavior harder to reason about.
Implement the header path
Yahoo’s current best-practices page requires a functioning List-Unsubscribe mechanism for marketing and subscribed messages. It strongly recommends the RFC 8058 POST method and also lists mailto as acceptable. Yahoo’s FAQ describes RFC 8058 as the preferred implementation for one-click unsubscribe.
Where your ESP supports RFC 8058, use the POST method so the mailbox provider can send an unsubscribe request without requiring the recipient to load a landing page.
Keep the visible body link
Yahoo also requires a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message body. That link may take the recipient to a preference page.
The header action and the body link should reach the same suppression system or otherwise produce the same subscription state. Test both paths before a large send.
Honor the request within 2 days
Yahoo requires unsubscribe requests to be honored within 2 days. The practical test is not whether the endpoint returns a successful HTTP response, but whether the next campaign actually excludes the unsubscribed address from that subscription.
Check imports, retries, CRM synchronization and list rebuilds so they cannot silently restore a suppressed address. Yahoo notes that the blue unsubscribe control also depends on sufficient sender reputation and engagement, so its absence alone does not prove your headers are missing.
