How to plan a re-engagement email

Decide who is eligible, what the message asks and when the sequence stops.

A re-engagement message should resolve a clear question: does this subscriber still want this specific email? Decide what you will do with the answer before writing the campaign.

Set eligibility before content

Start with an existing subscription you can substantiate. Apply current unsubscribe, complaint and invalid-address exclusions. Do not treat a re-engagement campaign as permission to contact an unrelated acquired list.

Review your inactivity definition and sending history. Some people may look inactive because you rarely sent, tracking was unavailable or their interactions happened elsewhere.

Ask one understandable question

Identify the publication or message type, remind readers what they can expect and offer a clear preference action. A relevant choice such as a lower frequency can help when you can actually honour it.

Avoid manufacturing urgency or offering an unrelated reward merely to generate a click. The useful outcome is a clear subscription preference.

Set the stop conditions

Write down the maximum sequence length, the action that ends it and the treatment of non-response. A recipient who unsubscribes must leave the relevant marketing flow; someone who confirms should not keep receiving reminders asking them to confirm.

Document the treatment of non-response before the first send. Apply the chosen subscription status consistently after the sequence ends.

Review the resulting audience

Check that confirmed subscribers, opted-out subscribers and non-responders move into the intended states. Review complaint and failure signals before considering another send. Do not measure success only by a temporarily larger click count.
