Yahoo sender requirements and recommendations
Turn Yahoo’s current sender requirements into a practical checklist for ordinary and bulk senders.
Requirements for all senders
Yahoo requires at least SPF or DKIM authentication, a spam complaint rate below 0.3%, valid forward and reverse DNS for sending IPs, and messages that comply with RFC 5321 and RFC 5322.
Treat these as per-stream checks rather than a one-time domain checklist. Employee mail, lifecycle mail, transactional mail and marketing mail can use different infrastructure and authentication identities.
Additional requirements for bulk senders
Bulk senders must implement both SPF and DKIM. Yahoo also requires a valid DMARC policy with at least p=none, with DMARC passing through alignment of the visible From domain with either the SPF domain or DKIM domain. Relaxed alignment is acceptable.
For marketing and subscribed mail, Yahoo requires a functioning List-Unsubscribe mechanism, a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message body, and unsubscribe requests honored within 2 days. Yahoo’s current best-practices page strongly recommends the RFC 8058 POST method and also lists mailto as acceptable.
Understand Yahoo’s bulk-sender definition
Yahoo does not publish a fixed volume threshold for bulk classification. Its FAQ says enforcement can consider the authenticated domain or From header domain, together with other information such as content and sending IP.
Do not plan your architecture around staying below an assumed daily number. Build the program so the required authentication, unsubscribe and complaint controls work consistently when volume grows.
Operational checklist
For each sending platform, record the From domain, Return-Path domain, DKIM signing domain, sending IP ownership, reverse DNS, subscription type and unsubscribe path. Send a fresh message from the actual workflow and verify the observed authentication results.
Keep marketing and transactional streams distinguishable. Yahoo recommends segregating email types by IP or DKIM domain so a problem in one stream is less likely to create shared reputational risk.
